Wolfgang "Slim" Metz Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the passing of devoted husband, father, uncle, brother-in-law and grandfather, Wolfgang “Slim” Metz, after a short stay in hospital. Born in Munich, Germany in 1940, he emigrated with his mom, Ilse Metz to Canada in 1955. Settling in the Grande Prairie region on his stepdad, Rueben Metz’s farm. Once Slim finished school, he cowboyed on numerous southern Alberta ranches in the Milk River and Cypress Hills areas, and it was these years that became the plot of countless stories and adventures recreated for all to hear. Upon meeting Shirley Dolgopol of Elkwater, they were married in 1965 and returned to Grande Prairie where he managed a small farm and started a successful masonry business after earning the golden trowel award for top grades at NAIT. Over the years, he participated in many sports including rodeo, basketball, soccer and hockey. In 1985 they moved to Medicine Hat where he continued to run his masonry business and became one of the founders of the Medicine Hat Rock and Lapidary Club and enjoyed over 4 decades of rock hounding, fossilling and jewelry making. He had fond memories of travelling to Cuba, Hawaii, Mexico, Europe as well as many trips to the US with Shirley. He was a gifted musician who played guitar and the organ by ear and would play for family and friends. A kind and generous man, Slim loved socializing and talking with everyone. He was a devout Christian attending Victory Lutheran church every Sunday. He leaves his wife of 60 yrs Shirley Metz, (nee Dolgopol); son, Rodney (Leeann Shewchuk) and their daughter, Matayah; daughter, Holly Rosenberger (Paul Matthews) and their girls, Sonia and Rylee of Revelstoke, BC. He was so proud of his family, especially his granddaughters and attended as many of their sporting events as he was able to.
