Walter Peliwan

Walter Peliwan, age 81, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Born in Watenstedt-Salzgitter, Germany, Walter lived a life defined by hard work, craftsmanship, and a passion for creating things with his hands. He was a respected barber and owner of Top Hat Barbershop, where he spent well over 50 years serving generations of customers. Through his profession, Walter became a trusted friend to many and a familiar face in the community.

Beyond the barbershop, Walter was well known for his love of hot rods and custom cars. He was an accomplished car builder and enthusiast who founded the Cypress Rod and Custom Car Club, bringing together others who shared his passion for automobiles and craftsmanship.

Walter was also a talented woodworker who could seemingly build anything he set his mind to. Whether he was constructing furniture, working on a vehicle, helping a friend with a project, or tending to his plants and garden, he took great pride in creating and nurturing things that would last.

Walter is lovingly remembered by his son, Troy Peliwan; daughter-in-law, Annabel; and his cherished granddaughters, Jemima and Georgia. He is also survived by his brother, Ewald, and his sisters, Helga and Alwine.

He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Adeline Peliwan, and by his brother, Helmut Peliwan.

Walter’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the friendships he forged, the cars he built, and the family he loved deeply. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced when arrangements have been finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to honor Walter’s memory to spend time with loved ones, lend a helping hand to a friend, build something with their own hands, or pursue a hobby that brings them joy, as Walter did throughout his life.
