Walter Lietz

On April 12, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer, our beloved husband, father, and Opa passed away peacefully, and went to his eternal home with Jesus at the age of 84.

Walter will be lovingly remembered by his children, Gordon Lietz, Sharon (Scott) Guterson, and Heidi (Ryan) Dubetz; grandchildren, Alyssa, Berlynn, and Keaton. He is also sadly missed by wife, Ruby Lietz (nee Peters) and her daughter, Kathy (John) Berard and their daughters, Bethany, Leah and Julianne; her son, Jim (Perye) Andres and their son, Sam. He also leaves to mourn his brothers, Bruno (Dagmar) Lietz, and Gary Lietz; as well as loving nieces, nephews, their children, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Heinrich (Martha) Lietz, his first wife and mother of his children, Hildegard Lietz (nee Labrentz); his brothers, Arnold Lietz and Kurt (Hetty) Lietz; brothers-in-law, Dan Schulz, Art Labrentz, Ray Labrentz, Erwin Labrentz; and his granddaughter, Zoey Dubetz.

He was a hardworking, strong and loving person. His favourite pastimes were fishing, volunteering, playing rook, visiting with friends, travelling, playing baseball, and watching all kinds of sports - his favourite team being the Toronto Blue Jays. 

In addition to his passion for helping others, he left behind a legacy of faith that guided him his entire life. Walter, Dad, Opa, we thank you for the path you’ve paved before us, and for a lifetime of memories we will all cherish forever. Special thanks to St. Joseph’s hospice who made his final days comfortable with their kindness and compassion.

A celebration of his life will be held in Medicine Hat on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Hillcrest Church (3785 13 Ave SE, Medicine Hat, AB) at 1:00pm. For those unable to attend, the service will be available to view by visiting www.hillcrestchurch.net/funerals.
