Sara Unger Obituary

Sara Unger of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13th, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Sara leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters Sylvia (Mark) Jantzen, Vivian (Tom) Fry, Donna Ginther, and one son, David Unger, as well as 8 grandchildren [Theresa Jantzen Reed (Ryan), Erica Jantzen Fraser (James), Craig Jantzen (Amanda), Jonathan Pulyk, Karen Ginther, Stephanie Ginther, Tyrell Unger and Courtney Roach]; 9 great-grandchildren, as well as brothers, Johnny Voth and Jake Voth (Sophie); sister, Rose Faulkner. Sara was predeceased by her dear husband Abe in 1996; as well, her parents, Peter and Helen Voth, and sisters Liz Klassen and Margaret Dyck and brothers Edward Voth and Albert Voth.

Born in Greenfarm on July 2, 1934 she grew up in the middle of an active, musical farming family, later attending Herbert Bible School where she met the love of her life, Abe. They were married on August 21, 1955 and farmed together in the Herbert area until Abe’s passing in 1996. Abe and Sara were an amazing team, always in love, and incredibly sacrificial in their love for the 4 children that they raised on the south Saskatchewan prairie. Sara has cooked thousands of dozens of buns and Christmas cookies, prepared countless family dinners and back-of-the-half-ton harvest meals. Voth and Unger gatherings were times of laughter and sharing. Grandkids, nieces and nephews all treasure wonderful memories of visits to the farm. Sara always brought enthusiasm and energy to the rhythms of life on the land – seeding, gardening, cooking, harvest, neighbors, church and friends. A brief change of scenery was a 5 year period in the late 70’s spent in Winkler, Manitoba, a time in her life when she thrived in new surroundings. She had a beautiful, joyful spirit that was centered on her love for God, serving others and singing. Sara adored children and was happiest when surrounded by family; the more the merrier.

Following Abe’s passing she relocated to Medicine Hat, living at Chinook Village from 1997- 2021 and The Wellington for the past 2 years. Her early years in Chinook were characterized by enjoyable friendships among other widows, shuffleboard, volunteering in the library, singing in a choir and involvement at Crestwood Church. This included two tax seasons of being a welcoming greeter as community members came to the church to have their income tax completed as a free service. Sara was always willing to drop everything if grandkids needed some loving attention. She took a number of trips (Panama, Oklahoma, Alaska, BC) with her daughter, granddaughter and/or other family members or friends. She was someone who found joy every day, trusted the Lord in an uncomplicated way, and devoted time each morning for Daily Bread and prayer.

Her family is very grateful for the care that she was given by the amazing people of both senior facilities over these last years.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, www.lung.ca.

A Celebration of Life will take place on April 7, 2023 at Chinook Village in the Garden Lounge @ 2pm.
