Bob was born in Fairview, the second son to Alfred and Doris Beddow. At the age of four, his father became the grain buyer for National Grain at Roma. Bob attended country school, then travelled to Peace River for his Junior and Senior years. His youth was spent riding his horse in the hills and as a jockey, racing at the local fairs.
He was a young man when he married Carleen Pilgrim, and together they had their two sons, Jim and Bob. He was employed at Brown’s Mens Wear in Peace River before pursuing a career in Education, later returning to Peace River to teach.
In 1974, he married Karen and together they resided near Stony Plain raising and showing Arabian Horses, then opened Beddow’s Mens Wear in Spruce Grove. In 1996 they retired to spend the winters in the south and continued working summers for the next 10 years.
Bob loved retirement. He filled his days with hiking, biking, dancing, cards and happy hour with friends. He was known for his storytelling and jokes. He excelled in shuffleboard and in 2013 was inducted into the Arizona Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. He was his happiest sitting behind the wheel, with a new adventure around the corner.
In the fall of 2012, Bob was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis, a form of muscular dystrophy. This disease devastated his body, gradually taking away the use of his legs, hands and arms.
He was loved and will be missed by his wife, Karen; his sons, Jim (Marla) and Bob (Helen); his grandchildren, David, Amanda, Gregory, Declan and Callum; and 4 great grandchildren, Abby, Alex, Lily and Zoey.
At Bob’s wishes, there will be no formal service.
