Madeleine Campbell Obituary

Madeleine Sybil Campbell (née Filgas) passed away on March 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family members.

Madeleine–Madzie to her sisters, but only her sisters–was born on November 9, 1938 in Taber, Alberta to Stephen and Mary Filgas, who preceded her in death. After living the single life in Calgary, in 1959 she settled down and married Richard Campbell (on Valentine’s Day!). The young couple started out in Ralston but once their first two children arrived they moved to Medicine Hat, where they added two more to the family. The Hat has been her home ever since.

Over her 87 years, Madeleine lived a full life. At various points, she was a bowler, a square-dancer, a crafter, a sales person, a community volunteer, and–to the delight of anyone who tasted her cinnamon buns–a baker. Her baking was legendary and even extended to creative birthday cakes. Her children fondly remember the annual ritual of leafing through catalogues of cake pans to find just the right one for that year’s birthday.

She was also a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After having served in various capacities for the Church locally, in their retirement she and Richard served as missionaries in the historic city of Nauvoo, Illinois.

Whether it was her family, congregation, neighborhood, or community, Madeleine spent a lifetime helping others in need. She always knew when to bring a meal, stop by for a visit, or volunteer to babysit. Indeed, babysitting was her specialty. She had a special bond with children–babies especially–as they could no doubt sense her unconditional love.

In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by her sister, Marilyn Heinricks (Harry); daughters, Carmen Schlenker (Wayne), Richelle Smith (DeeJay), Pam Lacusta (Shane); son, David Campbell (Kirsten); as well as 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. And she kept track of every birthday, never failing to send a card!

Given her life of selflessness, it was fitting that in her final hours she was encircled by those she served and loved.

Her family would like to thank all of the health professionals at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital who provided such tender care during her final days–a special thank you to the staff on 4th West and 2nd North, and to Dr. Prince and Dr. Van der Merwe. We are also grateful to the staff of Masterpiece for filling her last few months with joy and kindness.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing where they can share memories of Madeleine on the evening of Friday, March 27 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1864 Division Ave N, Medicine Hat.
