Herbert Whittred

Herbert Fredrick Whittred was born in Medicine Hat, AB, to the late Bassett Arthur Whittred and Estella Warn on October 17th, 1935. Herb developed a lifelong love of music shaped by his father, who was the local bandmaster for the Salvation Army Band. Herb played many instruments, and he always talked about playing in the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Parade.

Herb was a leader with the Boy Scouts of Canada; he loved sharing the outdoors with his troop, often reminiscing about a memorable trip to Pine Lake. Herb had an inquisitive mind; he received a Diploma in Professional Television Servicing on April 17th, 1961, from the National Radio Institute in Washington, D.C. and later received a Diploma in Servicing Electrical Appliances on July 6th, 1966, from the same Institute. Herb then completed a Small Appliance Repair course through the Lethbridge Community College in August of 1988. During his working years, he ran a TV and small appliance repair shop in Medicine Hat. One of his hobbies was involvement in the Ham Radio Club here in Medicine Hat, where he spent many of his evenings chatting with friends across the country. In his later years, he embraced a creative hobby, lovingly crafting toys for children out of clothespins and popsicle sticks. Herb will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by those who knew him.
