Donald Wong Obituary

Donald Lawrence Wong, aged 88, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and deep community connection.

Born in 1937, Don was raised on a farm in the Kelvington, Saskatchewan area before moving to Calgary as a teenager. He began his career with Midwest Surveys in 1956, where his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities saw him rise through the ranks. In 1971 he relocated to Medicine Hat to open the field office and was employed for 36 years as a surveyor, a shareholder, a director and Manager, positions he held with pride and dedication.  Known by his colleagues and long-time friends as a mentor, leader, and “the general”, Don inspired those around him with his wisdom, strength and steady guidance.

Don’s contributions extended far beyond his professional life he was also a pillar of his community.  He served as director and President of the Chinook chapter of Pheasants Forever, board member of the Irvine Curling Club and Ag Society, member, director and President of the Medicine Hat Oilman’s Association and was a valued board member on a number of Cypress County divisions including Ag, Seed Plant and Forty Mile Gas Co-op. His commitment was recognized when he was named Citizen of the Year in Cypress County in 2016.

In retirement, Don embraced his love of rural life on his hobby farm, where he raised exotic birds including pheasants and peacocks. He also founded the GreenValley Saskatoon U-Pick Farm, creating a place where community and nature came together. In 2019, he sold his cherished farm and moved into Medicine Hat and there, he enjoyed one of his proudest possessions—a beautifully maintained 1957 Ford Fairlane.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Bernhard Wong and Barbara Wong (née Morice). He is lovingly remembered by his former wife and good friend Carolynn, daughter Crystal, son Derrick, sisters Louise Sonstelie (nee Wong) and Sondra Bebault (nee Wong), and his special relationships with nephews Randy and Trevor Sonstelie, and niece Darci Nixdorf.

Don’s life was defined by dedication—to his work, his community, and his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him

Don chose to have no formal funeral service, just to be kindly remembered by his family and friends.
