Alvin "Smokey" Lanz Obituary

Smokey Lanz passed away at the Medicine Hat Hospital, surrounded by his loving family sharing laughter and stories of the many wonderful memories he helped create.

Smokey was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his loved ones. He enjoyed many summers fishing and camping with his family, creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Known for his quick wit, Smokey always had a joke ready and brought laughter to those around him.

He was deeply community-minded and generously volunteered his time over the years, including coaching minor hockey in Medicine Hat and Redcliff, where he made a lasting impact on many young athletes.

Smokey was also involved in securing the grant that helped build the back nine of the Redcliff Riverview Golf Course, a place he enjoyed often with his wife, family, and friends.

He shared a love of travel with his wife, Gail, and especially enjoyed spending winters together in Palm Springs, surrounded by friends.

Smokey’s love for Gail was evident in the devoted care he gave her through several years of health challenges before her passing.

Smokey will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him and lovingly remembered by his sons, Ron Lanz (Monica) and Donny (Laurie) Lanz; grandchildren, Reid (Kyla) Lanz, Hayley (Ty) McKenna, Riley Lanz and Sidney Lanz (Alex); great grandchildren, Kayson and Hollin Lanz, Maysen McKenna; step grandchildren, Kurt Wepruk (Leighton & Landon) and Nick Wepruk (Sarah); sister, Carol Ogilvie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Smokey was predeceased by his wife, Gail Lanz; daughter-in-law, Monica Lanz; father and mother, Jack and Eva Lanz; mother-in-law, Dorothy Kachmar; stepfather-in-law, Peter Kachmar; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Jack Leismeister; brothers-in-law, Alan Ogilvie and Ken Melbourn; sister, Betty Melbourn.

As per Smokey's wishes a private graveside service will be held for family and friends.
