Agnes "Sonnia" Marion Zaharia

Agnes (Sonnia) Marion Zaharia passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the age of 77 years after a 3-year battle with cancer and other health complications. She is survived by her 2 children, Quentin Zaharia (Kim Zaharia) and Kim Franz (Matt Franz); brother, Ben Kuzminski (Carol Kuzminski); grandson, Declan Zaharia; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins; aunts and uncles; and lifelong friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Mervin Zaharia; parents, Jack and Mary Kuzminski.

Agnes (Sonnia) Marion Zaharia was born in Preeceville, SK, on August 17, 1946. She attended primary school at Preeceville, graduating grade 12 in June, 1964, then proceeding to attend and graduate from Secretarial business School earning her a diploma in 1965.

Sonnia and Mervin Zaharia were married on October 12, 1968 in Preeceville, SK and soon moved to Thompson, Manitoba where work took Mervin and Sonnia. While living in Thompson, Sonnia and Mervin welcomed their first of 2 children, Quentin Blair Zaharia. In this time Sonnia also began studying with Jehovah’s Witnesses. Soon work took the family to Edmonton, AB and then returning to Preeceville, SK in 1972 where she continued to live and grow the family with the addition of a new baby daughter, Kim Rhea Zaharia (Franz). Sonnia continued to study the bible and was baptized on October 22, 1977 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She spent many thousands of hours volunteering her time to educate and teach people the same hope from the Bible that provided her strength to endure life’s hardships while sharing a positive hope for the future.

Sonnia continued to work throughout her life in different career paths, early in her career as secretary for the RM of Preeceville, then moving to the health care sector providing Paramedic/Ambulance services while finalizing her career in support at the Sturgis District Care Home. She weaved booking services for people throughout the years in amongst all the other activities she was involved in. Sonnia could also be found providing transportation services to those in need for medical appointments out of town.

As a nature lover, Sonnia could always be found planting and attending her many gardens either in town or on the family farm. Loving natures’ beauty from plants & animals, her yard and home were always adorned with flowers and cats of different varieties. We still do not know the closely guarded secret of the morel mushroom hiding spot. No stray cat was ever immune from ‘just walking by’ her home without receiving a welcoming meal and warm bed and the real possibility of a full-time tenure for life at the Sonnia home for lost catsos.

In October 2020 Sonnia moved to Medicine Hat, AB with her daughter Kim Franz (Zaharia) and son-in-law Matt Franz where she had continuous care until recently losing her 3-year battle with cancer.

Sonnia would appreciate all to remember the following scripture that has brought her comfort through similar times and will bring comfort for those that mourn her passing by reflecting the following in Isaiah 25:8 “He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.”

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 2:30pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
